Delivery of Two Double-Girder Gantry Cranes in Washington D.C.

For an impressive infrastructure project in the United States, we managed the entire process—from design to installation—for two heavy-duty double-girder gantry cranes. Commissioned by our client CBNA (Civil & Building North America LLC), these custom-built cranes are currently playing a crucial role in the large-scale renovation of the sewer network along the Potomac River in Washington D.C.

The Challenge

Renovating a sewer network on this scale demands logistical precision and absolute reliability. Our gantry cranes are now running at full speed on the construction site and are used intensively every day. Their primary task? To continuously and safely supply the tunnel boring machine deep underground.

To lower heavy building materials and segments safely into the shaft, robust lifting beams are used. Because the loads in tunnel construction can vary significantly in size and weight, solutions like adjustable lifting beams are indispensable to ensure maximum flexibility and stability during the lifting process.

Specifications of Our Double-Girder Gantry Cranes

From the successful FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) to the final assembly in America, these double-girder gantry cranes are true powerhouses designed for the heaviest work. They are equipped with the following impressive specifications:

  • Enormous Hook Path and Capacity: Both cranes feature a powerful 30-ton hoisting unit. With an impressive hook path of no less than 49 meters, the cranes can effortlessly reach the required depth of the tunnel shaft.

  • Smart Automation: Time is a critical factor in this project. Therefore, the cranes are equipped with an advanced Go-To function. This ensures that the crane positions the load—suspended from the lifting beams—fully automatically and with millimeter precision directly above the tunnel boring machine. This saves time and reduces the risk of human error.

  • Maximum Safety: When lifting 30 tons over a deep shaft, safety is the highest priority. Consequently, the cranes are equipped with an extra-large disc brake with a diameter of 1.5 meters. This serves as a robust secondary safety brake should the primary brake fail.

A Successful International Project

We look back on this completed project with great pride. From the first drawings in the engineering department to the final installation and commissioning in the United States, our team delivered a top-tier performance. We would like to thank CBNA for the excellent cooperation and their trust in our expertise.
