• The six double girder overhead cranes supplied by BKRS play a crucial role in the production of monopiles at SIF.

Production starts in Roermond, where shorter steel pipes are rolled from plate. These segments are transported to the Maasvlakte by ship. In the factory on the Maasvlakte, these segments are welded together, eventually growing into meter-long monopiles weighing 500 to 600 tons. To move these heavy monopiles, BKRS’ six double-girder overhead cranes are essential.

Four of these cranes can be electrically linked together, allowing them to lift monopiles of up to 1,000 tonnes together with a single operation. This is crucial for removing the tubes from the ship, positioning them on the welding machines and the final transport of the entire monopile. With a lifting height of 25 meters, the cranes are ideal for working with the long, heavy monopiles that often need to be lifted over other objects in the factory.

A sustainable challenge

In order to deliver the six double-girder overhead cranes within the set timeframe, BKRS had to scale up. An extra production hall was even built to cope with the time pressure. The first crane had to be delivered within six months of the order confirmation, followed by a subsequent crane every month. Despite the strict deadlines, BKRS managed to deliver all cranes on time and to SIF’s full satisfaction.

This project demonstrates that BKRS can not only provide high-quality custom double girder overhead cranes, but is also flexible and scalable to meet the demands of large-scale projects. Several fellow companies complimented BKRS on the impressive result.

The delivered overhead cranes

In general, the project contributes to sustainability. SIF and BKRS together contribute to more wind energy and a reduction in CO2 emissions. BKRS was therefore keen to go a step further in such a project. The cranes supplied by BKRS are therefore ‘green’. If cranes have to deliver power, a lot of power is needed for this. Of course, this is not necessarily good for the environment. When the crane brakes, a lot of heat (braking energy) is released. The cranes supplied by BKRS are equipped with return units that ensure that the braking energy is fed back into the power grid. This ensures that the impact on the environment is limited with these cranes.
