• Truss Gantry Crane for Voestalpine Railpro

BKRS has delivered a truss gantry crane to Voestalpine Railpro with a span of 55 meters!

Goals

Since a small rail already weighs about 1.5 tonnes, the use of a crane is necessary. A well-functioning crane is therefore crucial for Voestalpine Railpro’s services and for stable public transport in the Netherlands. BKRS has been engaged by Voestalpine Railpro to supply a new, well-functioning gantry crane.

The old gantry crane that Voestalpine Railpro was using needed to be replaced. In recent years, maintenance costs have risen while the number of malfunctions has increased. In order to reduce both the costs and the number of malfunctions, a replacement was sought. From a selection of providers, Voestalpine Railpro eventually chose BKRS. An important role in the choice was the fact that another business unit of Voestalpine has already done business with BKRS in the past. The satisfaction with this collaboration was an important reason for Voestalpine Railpro to also work with BKRS.

Our solution

BKRS has replaced the old crane that Voestalpine Railpro was using. The project did not only consist of constructing a new crane. The dismantling and disposal of the old crane was also carried out by BKRS. Characteristic of BKRS’ solutions is that they fit in well with the very specific wishes of the customer. This project is a good example of this. The unique thing about the gantry crane that we supplied to Voestalpine Railpro is the span. For most projects, a span of between 30 and 40 meters is common. The special thing about this crane is the span of no less than 55 meters. This means that the crane is 55 meters from wheel to wheel. Add to this the fact that the crane has an operating load of 10 tonnes and the unique character and large size of this project become clear. The large span of the crane was necessary because of the terrain. All the material of Voestalpine Railpro is stored within 55 meters and there was already an existing track that the crane has to drive over. The presence of this existing railway track created another challenge: manufacturing a crane that was as light as possible. By making the construction as light as possible, we wanted to minimize the load on the (existing) rail. We have succeeded well in this set-up. Finally, the crane is frequency-controlled. This creates gradual and smooth movements that allow loads to be moved without jerking.
