  • Single Girder Gantry Crane with Vacuum Lifter for Expandable

    BKRS realized a single-girder gantry crane in an existing hall, including a vacuum lifter for the assembly of widening trailers.

Goals

Expandable came to BKRS for a gantry crane with vacuum lifter, to fill in the new production location for the assembly of widening trailers. Due to the growth of Expandable, it is possible that the new production location will be a solution in the short term, after which the company will take the next step in expanding production. Expandable’s growth is not expected to stop. It was therefore important that the crane could also be taken to another production location.

The single girder gantry crane with vacuum lifter is used in the production of the widening trailers with sandwich panels up to 13.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. BKRS supplied an adjustable, custom-made vacuum lifter with adjustable suction cups with the gantry crane for this purpose. This allows Expandable to move and tilt the panels efficiently and without damage in one go during the production of the trailers.

 

The project

Expandable is a manufacturer of mobile and expandable trailers, which are used in various industries. For example, Expandable supplies trailers that are used for marketing, product presentations, car and motorsport, hospitality, medical applications, and in the TV and film industry. The company started in 2016 and has had a production location in Eersel since 2019, which has already been expanded several times. The latest expansion concerns a new production hall of approximately 5000 m2 where the new single girder gantry crane has been placed.

The steel structure of this hall was not suitable for a built-in crane system. That is why the choice fell on a gantry crane. This crane system does not intervene in the existing infrastructure and could therefore easily be applied to the new production location.

The delivery time was also important to the client. With a lead time of about four months, Expandable was able to quickly start production at the new location.

Ronald Nieuwenhuizen, operational director Expandable: “Assembly of the crane in the hall was very professional with a well-oiled team and the necessary equipment. The crane was actually up in two days.”

Our solution

BKRS thought along with the customer’s challenges. For example, it was important to Expandable that the crane with crane rail could be taken to another location in the future. They also wanted to use the maximum lifting height; Because the crane will be placed in an existing hall, the crane is tailor-made for the hall. This was another reason for Expandable to come to BKRS for a piece of customization, instead of opting for a used crane.

For this reason, BKRS supplied a single-girder gantry crane on rails including vacuum lifter for this project. The rail was mounted on the existing concrete floor, an extra foundation was not necessary for this. The crane has a maximum operating load of 5,000 kilos, a span of 26 meters, a crane track length of 58 meters, a maximum lifting height of 8 meters, and the crane is radio controlled. The vacuum lifter is adjustable and configured to fit all sandwich panels that Expandable uses in the production of the trailers. This makes it possible to perform all actions during the production process without having to adjust them again in between.
